Tangier
Island
Tangier Island,
with a population of about 600 people, most of whom speak with an
Elizabethan accent, has no industry. Long ago it was inhabited
by farmers, but when the Chesapeake Bay came alive in the 1800's
with commerce because of the bounty of seafood it offered, the
people of Tangier turned from harvesting the land to harvesting the
waters of crabs and oysters. Since then, the people's
livelihood has been wrenched from the unpredictable waters of the
Chesapeake Bay.
Tangier Island
is a place you will never forget. Nowhere in our great country
is there another place like it.
